This has literally been stuck in my head since last Friday. Dare you not to dance to it. :)
Thomas Newman - Any Other Name
“The Pier” by Rachel Portman
Second Chance (RAC Mix)- Peter Bjorn and John
Original Release- Self-released (Soundcloud) 2010
(And yes, I edited that cover myself)
RAC is one of the most versatile remixers around, period. This relatively-new single is great example of their versatility.
First, go take a listen to the original track at Stereogum.
Now check the remix (above).
My god, what a world of difference.
RAC has turned this song from a nice rock/punk-ish tune to a nice, kicking, poppy/new ageish thing worthy of any hipster’s tweets. And they accomplished this without deteriorating much of the song. Vocals and guitar remain, though the guitars are much subtler and restrained. The percussion is rewritten and much more prominent, giving the whole thang a nice beat and rhythm to it. The biggest, and most welcome change is by far DAT
ASSPIANO. I mean, wow. It’s crazy how much one instrument changes so much of the song. And of course, production is wonderful too. The song doesn’t blare at you, and you can pick out all the subtleties, such as the guitar and synth. The echo effect on the voice doesn’t feel as cliche as it usually is in other mixes.
